It’s time ALL current and prospective Dachshund owners seriously consider what is required when taking ownership of these extremely high maintenance hounds!

Yes, we understand Dachshunds are simply irresistible and are one of the “must-have” breeds of the moment, and yes, we know they are even better in twos, three or more!

But ….

One in four … yes one in four of these adorable long-bodied, short-legged dogs will be affected by IVDD at some stage in their lifetime.  These facts are frightening; particularly to the owners who have already walked the journey and live in fear of it re-occurring (once a diseased spine always a diseased spine).

We understand that it’s great fun interacting with owners on Facebook Groups and Instagram posts – Dachshunds are the best BUT PLEASE do yourself and your dog/s a favour and take a moment to familiarise yourself with the following topics as they may just save you a world of pain, both financially and emotionally.

  • Signs & symptoms of an IVDD episode
  • Preparing an Emergency Plan
  • Considering Pet Insurance or starting a Piggy Bank
  • Reducing the risk by looking at lifestyle factors
  • The importance of ethical breeding practices

DISA is always here to have the backs of owners when it comes to IVDD, however, as it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a strong proactive Dachshund community prepared to work side by side to give this evil disease the flick!
