Whether treating conservatively or surgically, rehabilitation has proven to be paramount in a dachshund’s recovery and future well-being following an IVDD event.
Visit Rehab-101 for a comprehensive overview of IVDD management timelines and programs for both surgical and conservatively treated hounds.
We always recommend owners first consult with a qualified rehabilitation provider when commencing an at-home exercise program. However, we are realists and understand that this is not always possible. Distances, budgets, and busy lives play a large part in why owners struggle to maintain a regular exercise program during recovery and throughout the dog’s “new normal” life.
At-home management can be straightforward once owners take the time to familiarise themselves with techniques and become proactive in their hound’s recovery.
But before you dive in, let’s be clear. You must understand the difference between CONSERVATIVE and SURGICAL rehabilitation.
Conservative at-home rehabilitation
Is about allowing the affected disc/s to heal naturally, therefore it is a gentler approach, requiring passive movements and stretches – nothing that will jar, harm or cause pain or further injury.
If you are unable to access allied services while undertaking Conservative treatment, don’t despair.

Surgical at-home rehabilitation
In most cases on discharge owners will be provided with a Discharge Program or may have an appointment with a Rehab provider with follow-up scheduled appointments. This is fantastic! Be guided by them and ask about the types of at-home exercises that can be undertaken between appointments. Take videos and ask lots of questions. Once you get used to handling your hounds you will find it to be a rewarding and bonding experience.
If you haven’t been afforded a plan or follow-up rehab, don’t despair.
